SELF-ESTEEM has been defined as a basic human need, i.e., "it makes an essential contribution to the life process," "is indispensable to normal and healthy self development, and has a value for SURVIVAL."
In order to fully thrive, girls absolutely need to have a proper self-image. Studies involving teen girls show that low self-esteem, depression and participation in risky behaviors go hand-in-hand. A major source of low self-esteem is poor body-image. Therefore our girls need to be instructed on taking care of themselves and their bodies.
WHEN YOU LOOK GOOD, YOU FEEL GOOD
While we don't want our girls to be overly obsessed with their appearance, we do want them to take pride in themselves and maintain proper hygiene. Girls, in even the most humbling situations, are encouraged to make the most of that which is available to look their personal best and thereby avoid potential embarrassment and poor self-image.
The Beautiful You! program focuses on these issues. Project Bloom facilitators use books and role-plays to introduce the importance of good hygiene. Information is presented in a fun, yet sensitive manner, and tailored to be age-appropriate. We also partner with local beauty service providers to do free make-overs. And, since many of our girls can't afford designer scented gels, creams and sprays, we try to send them home with great gift bags, full of samples, books and journals.
Participants of the Beautiful You! program include residents of the Salvation Army, Women and Children's Shelter of Charlotte, NC, and patients of Presbyterian Blume Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center. There is limited available to other qualified groups in the area. Please email dk@projectbloom.org for more information. |
